Every evening, a shabby, cluttered and dimly lit stage is transformed into one of the most brilliant and awe-inspiring experiences on Broadway. Among those that inhabit this transformed Bohemian apartment, the rent is due, and the audience is glad to help out with the expenses.

While the lines of screaming girls from his pop star days are in the past, Drew Lachey honors them with a T-shirt he wears while sitting on the stage of the Nederlander Theater.

"I ROCK CATHOLIC GIRLS," proclaims the Navy blue chemise.

Since September 2004, Lachey has been rocking much more than Catholic girls while playing Mark Cohen in the late Jonathan Larson's musical, Rent. He has exchanged the world of pop music for the vigorous audiences of Broadway.

For the past two and a half years, Steve Clem, the show electrician for the Broadway musical Rent, has been the mastermind behind making the lighting designer's ideas come to light on the stage.

Clem is responsible for the "look of the stage" during the show. "Lighting creates a mood for any show. Some shows are more effective by the way the lighting is as appose to others. In musicals, during the 'book scenes,' or the speaking scenes, the lighting is much more lush, colorful, and vibrant as appose to the big musical numbers.

Typically, Broadway's music comes from underneath a stage, land of hidden orchestra pits. Yet, in Broadway's Rent, the visibility of the musicians is part of what brings the music to life. With each electrified note having to speak for itself, the musicians are assigned what may be the hardest "script" of the show.

Eight times a week, Steve Mack sits huddled with fellow musicians, electric bass in hand and translates his piece of the musical score to the audience. His job may seem repetitive with so many shows, but Mack doesn't mind.
