Thousands expected for 81st annual CSPA Convention

Preparation for the Columbia Scholastic Press Association's 81st annual Scholastic Convention is in full swing. The event will take place at Columbia University in New York City from Wednesday, March 16 to Friday, March 18, 2005.

This national gathering of student editors and faculty advisers of newspapers, yearbooks, magazines, video productions and online media will be at Columbia University's Morningside Heights campus in uptown Manhattan.

The deadline for early registration is February 22nd at a fee of $68 per person. After February 22nd and at the convention, the fee is $78 per person. Advisers who plan to attend the Friday Adviser Awards Luncheon must register by February 22nd to receive reduced fees. Meals are not included in the Convention registration fee.

The Columbia Scholastic Press Association is planning to welcome students from schools across the nation to its 81st annual Scholastic Convention at Columbia University in the City of New York.

CSPA, Camp Broadway to host Stringers Program for Spring, 2005

New York City high school students, from both public and private schools, should start applying in the next few days for a program in which they will learn to report and comment on entertainment events. For the fourth year, Camp Broadway and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association will sponsor a Spring edition of their popular Stringers program to help train the next generation of media critics and arts journalists. Applications will be accepted with a postmark of no later than April 11, 2005.

For the past two and a half years, Steve Clem, the show electrician for the Broadway musical Rent, has been the mastermind behind making the lighting designer's ideas come to light on the stage.

Clem is responsible for the "look of the stage" during the show. "Lighting creates a mood for any show. Some shows are more effective by the way the lighting is as appose to others. In musicals, during the 'book scenes,' or the speaking scenes, the lighting is much more lush, colorful, and vibrant as appose to the big musical numbers.

Eight times a week, Steve Mack sits huddled with fellow musicians, electric bass in hand and translates his piece of the musical score to the audience. His job may seem repetitive with so many shows, but Mack doesn't mind.
